After Schwitters - John Darwell (conclusion)

In many ways this work stands, with the benefit of hindsight, at a point of great change in my work and accordingly in terms of my outlook.  It marks a move away from what could be described as images that are my response to subjects/scenarios that I feel angry about enough to want to bring them to wider attention whether to do with de-industrialisation, the horrors of the nuclear industry or to be more precise people caught up in these situations and unable to do anything about their circumstances.  This new work marks an ongoing meditative approach to my image making, often moving away from my previous wide view images into a closer look at the minutae of life. The small elements that reflect the bigger picture maybe?

After Schwitters became for me such a beginning.  It allowed me to produce images as a celebration rather than a condemnation and marked the beginning of a new and exciting path for me to explore.

Since this work was produced I have continued to move in this direction and feel my images have taken on a new and highly personal sensibility. I will be continuing the exploration of Schwitters over the next few years as I retrace his journey across Europe back to his native Hanover.
